SAMUEL JACKSON, BALTIMORE - Large Oval Lockback Whittler

1. Large whittler pen knife, oval or cigar pattern, 5-5/8 inches long closed.

2. Ivory handles. Brass liners (milled) and catch bit. Nickel silver lock tab, bolsters, and bar shield. Shield engraved H. Morton.

3. Lockback master blade. Lift tab to unlock.

4. Split backspring: One large spring for all three blades, divided at one end.

5. Master blade has NO nail nick. It is started open by pivoting the catch bit.

6. The brass catch bit is secured only by the blade pivot rivet for the two small blades.
Pulling the end of the catch bit makes it pivot, raising the master blade until it can be grasped and opened.

7. Small blades have sunk joints (blades lie flush when closed), and therefore have beveled thumbnail notches in the handles:
Notch for pen blade at its nail nick; notch for punch blade aligned to engage concave flute.

8. Made by Samuel Jackson, cutler and surgical instrument maker, Baltimore, Maryland. Active c1833-c1874.

9. SAMUEL / JACKSON / BALTIMORE tang stamped on master blade and punch. Large strike-through S or $ or SJ monogram on pen blade tang.

10. Damage: Pen blade sharpened, tipped. Master blade sharpened. The master blade locks too far open. Damage to backspring and liners, possibly from an attempt to force open the master blade. Age wear and minor checking to ivory. Most of milling worn from liners.
