William Wales SCAGEL Knife and Sheath
W. SCAGEL / HAND MADE Knife about 1 foot long. 1/4 inch thick blade. Stag scales. Brass guard and pins.

Reverse of blade stamped V. L. & A. / CHICAGO in an oval (Von Lengerke & Antoine).

Scagel style sheath, tooled and laced leather. Fits the knife.

Belt loop of sheath stamped ABERCROMBIE & FITCH CO. A&Fco NEW YORK. Probably made for A&F by Joseph Diekan.

Face of sheath throat neatly carved JACK SMITH.

Knife has been sharpened, slightly re-shaped. Sheath shows some use and wear.

The owner recounts: The knife was given to me by an old Cowboy friend here in Arizona... the name on the sheath, Jack Smith, is not the name of my Cowboy friend who presented me with this knife. This knife, along with a Civil War Merrill .54 cal. Civil War Carbine was found by my friend resting in the crook of a Juniper Tree here in Central Arizona just above Camp Verde (Fort Verde) Arizona many years ago while he was out riding the range herding cattle on horseback.
